Carl Schurz was born in Liblar, near Cologne, Prussia in 1929. After participating in the 1848-1849 German Revolution, he immigrated to the United States with his wife Margarethe in 1852 and shortly settled in Philadelphia. Schurz visited Washington, D.C. in 1854 and met with several senators and President Franklin Pierce.
