Benjamin Wade (1800-1878), a senator from Ohio, was born in Massachusetts. In 1821, he moved to Andover, Ohio. He studied law and started a practice in Jefferson, Ohio. He was elected to the state senate in 1837. In 1851, he won election to the U.S. Senate, where he served until 1869.
