Collection of commercial sound recordings, 1917-1990.

Commercial recordings of orchestral repertoire conducted by Leopold Stokowski, from acoustic recordings of 1917 to the mid-1920s, through electrical recordings of the mid-1920s to the 1970s, to long-playing records. Somewhat less than half of the collection consists of recordings with the Philadelphia Orchestra; other orchestras represented more sparingly in the collection include the New York Philharmonic, the All-American Youth Orchestra, the National Philharmonic, the Symphony of the Air, and the American Symphony Orchestra. In many of the items consisting of multiple discs, the discs themselves are commercially produced, but either Stokowski or Gatewood combined them into a custom set. Gatewood frequently attached reviews of recordings to the sleeves of his copy of the recording.
