John Von Neumann collection, 1919-1966 (bulk 1919-1949)

Consists of twenty-nine autograph letters, and a typed manuscript copy, of the mathematician John Von Neumann. The 30 p. typescript is a copy of a lecture titled AN ADAPTATION OF THE MADDIDA : A DIGITAL DIFFERNTIAL ANALYSER OF NORTHRUP AIRCRAFT, INC. According to a handwritten note at the bottom of p. 1, the lecture was presented to the Cowles Commission Conference at the University of Chicago in 1949. Included is a photocopy of and article from the PRINCETON ALUMNI WEEKLY of June 7, 1966 titled THE COMPUTER - BIG MACHINE ON CAMPUS, by Charles E. Pepper in which he writes about a new computer at Princeton University, and mentions the first computer built by Von Neumann, which is currently at the Smithsonian Institute.

John (Johann) Louis von Neumann (1903-1957) was born in Budapest and showed early signs of being a child prodigy. He entered the University of Budapest in 1921, but also attended the University of Berlin and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology before obtaining a degree in chemical engineering in 1925.
