James S. Barnes letters to his family, 1849 Oct.-1857 Sept.

Written primarily from Sacramento, but include also letters from Panama, San Francisco and the mining country. They describe his voyage from New York via the Isthmus, life in San Francisco and Sacramento where he worked as a carpenter, and his experiences mining and farming; and comment on economic conditions in California, with information on prices and cost of living. Included also are two letters, 1857, written by his brother Harvey who joined him in California.
