Juan Agustín Morfi collection of documents relating to New Spain, 1541-1772.

Contains 1) an annotated list of vessels engaged in the quicksilver trade through the port of Veracruz, 1581-1772; 2) some royal expenditures in the Caribbean, 1730-1750; 3) instructions for the Conde de Salvatierra, viceroy of New Spain, by his predecessor, Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, 1642; 4) a "Brief and Summary Report" by Alonso de Zurita 1554 to ca. 1565, regarding taxation and government of the Indians as compared with earlier, native, procedures; 5) journal of an expedition against the Chichimecas by Francisco de Sandoval Acazitli in the service of Viceroy Mendoza, 1541; (Cont.) 6) reports by or concerning the royal cosmographer, Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, 1689-1699, on the importance of Pensacola, request for information on the fortifications of San Juan de Ulúa, and a dispute between Sigüenza and Andrés de Arriola on the mapping of Pensacola Bay; 7) Martín de la Torre's letter on the nature of comets and that of 1680-1681 in particular; 8) five letters of Juan María de Salvatierra, 1697-1699, on the conquest and conversion of Lower California; and 9) records dating from 1646 to 1769 relating to the Congregación de la Purísima Concepción de María Santísima, semi-secular organization founded in Mexico City under Jesuit auspices in 1641.

Born in the province of Asturias, Spain, Juan Agustín Morfi (d. 1783) immigrated to America around 1755. In 1761, he became a Franciscan friar in Mexico City, where he also taught theology at the Colegio de Santa Cruz de Tlaltelolco.
