Louisiana Erwin Strentzel papers, 1850-1882.

Contains an incomplete diary from 1850 to 1882, (no entries for 1852-1867), some as original diary entries and some as transcriptions. Diary describes weather, fires, earthquakes; family life including John Muir; sale and purchases of goods, hunting, and fruit growing; gold mining; life in and around Martinez, Calif. and San Francisco; various groups living in Calif. including California Indians, Mexicans, Chinese, Japanese and Eastern Europeans; and U.S. and world events. Also includes a draft of a letter to her sister.

Louisiana Erwin born in Tennessee, moved with her family to Texas where she met and married John Strentzel, a Polish doctor, in 1843. They went by wagon train to California in 1849 with their two children. Their oldest child Louise married John Muir in 1880. Louisiana Erwin Strentzel died around 1897 in Martinez, Calif.
