Scrapbook of clippings on California viticulture, 1878-1880.

Contains articles on the purchase of land for vineyards in Fresno County, the shift from cultivation of wheat and barley to vinyards and orchards in Napa Valley, wild vines of Sonoma Valley and Cloverdale, grape cuttings and how they should be prepared and planted, Burgherr (also Burger) wine made in California, and California as a chief wine-producing region of the world. A lengthier article entitled Physical and moral influence of the vine, poses and answers the questions: "What are to be its effects upon industry and commerce?" and "What are to be its influences upon our people?" Contains a few letters to the editor regarding Propagation of the vine, an article written by Charles A. Wetmore (one of the letters is a response by Wetmore). Includes two short clippings of poetry and one of a memorial tribute to Judge Woodward of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. There is one loose clipping on the value of railroads in California as fixed by the State Board of Equalization.
