Antonio J. Waring papers, 1783-1961

This collection contains correspondence, notes, and manuscripts all relating to Antonio J. Waring, Jr.'s work in archaeology. The papers contain most of the research Waring collected and partial manuscripts for his book on Native American life. Most of this collection is photocopies of items in the Keith Read Collection held at the University of Georgia. Also included in this collection are documents relating to the ownership and registration of the Wanderer.

Antonio Johnston Waring, Jr. (1915-1964) was a pediatrician; his avocation was Native American archaeology. Waring received his B.A. in 1938 and his M.D. in 1942, both from Yale University. Josiah Tattnall (1795-1871) was the son of Governor Josiah Tattnall and Harriet Fenwick Tattnall. At the age of 10, he was sent to London for his education, where he remained until he was sixteen. Wanderer was the next to last documented ship to bring an illegal cargo of people from Africa to the United States, landing at Jekyll Island, Georgia on November 28, 1858.
