Primarily letters from Meigs to his father concerning family matters and the younger Meigs' work in the Rock Island, Illinois, and Keokuk, Iowa, area. Letters about engineering work often contain drawings. Also includes letters (1867-1868) to Meigs' sister Loulie, Meigs' article--"Lock Valves of the Mississippi River Lock at Keokuk, Ia.," and a notebook containing test results (1903-1909) from experiments on steam engines. There are no letters from 1886 to 1888.

Montgomery C. Meigs was an army officer and engineer. He was born in Augusta, Ga. on May 3, 1816. Meigs graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1836, where he studied civil and military engineering.
