Estate account book, 1831-1833.

This volume is the estate account of Amos Allen ( - ), the administrator of Nichols' estate. It includes a detailed inventory of the stock and equipment in Nichols' paper mill, as well as the household property. There is also a list of the items sold at the auction of Nichols' estate with prices and the names of purchasers. Other accounts detail Allen's services as administrator and his dealings with Nichols' debtors and creditors, most of whom appear to have been customers and suppliers.

John Nichols (1790-1831) was a paper maker in Newton Lower Falls, Mass. According to an obituary in the Columbian Centinel for January 19, 1831, he was a native of Scotland. However, this appears to be an error, because his grave record printed in Vital Records of Cambridge, Mass. states that he was born in Durham, Maine. John Nichols of Durham was the son of Captain Samuel Nichols ( - ) of Reading, Mass. and Rebecca Wimble ( - ). He served in the War of 1812 and spent two years as a prisoner of...
