Diary, 1775-1777.

The diary covers Bixby's service in the militia at Roxbury from 4 May 1775 to 3 January 1776. Bixby provides an intimate and fascinating glimpse of camp life at Roxbury during the siege of Boston and includes an account of the battle of Bunker Hill and numerous other skirmishes and incidents. Late in December, 1776, Bixby enlisted in John Putnam's militia company and marched to Danbury, Connecticut, then to Ramapo, in the Hudson Valley in New York, and then on to the American camp at Bound Brook, New Jersey. This portion of the journal is equally informative and is written in a crude but expressive style. The folder contains a handwritten copy of the diary, prepared c. 1850.
