Contains deeds and indentures; letters; receipts; promissory notes and other financial papers, including those related to family businesses; certificates; and miscellaneous other documents. Of particular interest are: various Harrisonburg-area documents incl. a downtown plat and an indenture that transferred land from T. Harrison to Rockingham County for the courthouse. Civil War documents incl. a 20 June 1862 letter describing the battles of Port Republic and Cross Keys and a couple of Confederate bills. Family materials of note incl. those of the Henkel family (correspondence and broadsides, some printed in both English and German); the Harrison family; and the John Koontz and Lincoln families. The Koontz folder contains an 1812 grant to land where Koontz built the house later occupied by the Lincolns. The Lincoln folder contains genealogy information and several land indentures, etc. incl. a deed of sale between Abraham Lincoln, Sr. and his wife Bathsheba (spl.) to Michael Shank (1781). Also incl. are numerous documents for the Varner family (correspondence: Stony Man, Page Co.; financial/legal; and distillery papers) 1991 additions to the collection include items from the following families/individuals: Thomas Basford, William Crawford, and the Garber, Martz and Winfield families
