The collection is particularly strong in the area of French bookbindings, reflecting the holdings of the Dept. of Drawings and Prints. Housing of the file in loose-leaf binders is designed to permit expansion of the collection with contributions from other donors.

Janet S. Byrne was a curator in the Department of Prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. During her 47-year career at the Museum, she developed a picture file of bookbindings and their descriptions that was rediscovered in the fall of 1993 when the Department of Drawings and Prints was preparing a survey of British illustrated books.
