Barraud family papers, 1779-1904 1810-1860.

Correspondence and other papers, mostly 1810-1860, of the Barraud family of Norfolk, Va. Correspondence of Dr. Philip Barraud, his wife Ann Blaws Hansford Barraud and their children, including Daniel Cary Barraud, Otway Byrd Barraud and Leliana Barraud Baker. A number of the letters, as well as some poems, were written by St. George Tucker. Subjects covered include medical service in the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and social life in Norfolk, Va. Also included in the collection are the narrative diary, 1844-1847, of John Taylor Barraud kept while serving in the U. S. Navy off the Mexican Coast; and a contemporary copy (1820) of Thomas Jefferson's thoughts on the education of women.

St. George Tucker (1752-1827), was born in Bermuda and emigrated to Williamsburg, Virginia where he attended the College of William and Mary. He served in the Revolutionary War, as a judge of the General Court of Virginia, and as professor of law at the College of William and Mary. He was elected to the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia. Tucker was appointed to the federal district court for Virginia. He married, firstly, Frances Bland Randolph who was the mother of John Randolph of Roanoke. ...
