Personal correspondence of Johnson and his wife, Elizabeth (Pike) Johnson, during their courtship, containing references to New Garden Academy, prohibition and temperance, and conditions at the University of North Carolina, 1883. There are also letters on education in North Carolina, 1857, and references to the opening of the academic year at Trinity College (now Duke University) in Durham, N.C., 1900. One volume contains accounts and personal entries of Moses E.D. Pike, Elizabeth's father, and entries for the number of hours he worked at various places, 1844-1866.
