Papers, 1839-1925.

The collection consists primarily of letters from Rev. De Votie's children, especially Jewett Gindrat, a newspaper editor at Columbus, Ga., from 1875 until his death in 1881; Jefferson Howard, medical student and member of the Confederate medical corps; and Elizabeth Annie. Jefferson Howard's letters relate mostly to his life as a student at Furman University, Mercer University, and the medical school of the University of Louisiana (now Tulane), and as a member of the Confederate Army Medical Corps. Among the subjects discussed are Confederate hospitals; wartime conditions in Charleston and environs; and his dissatisfaction with army life. Includes a lists of the graduates of the medical department of the University of Louisiana, 1834-1871. Elizabeth Annie's letters, 1861-1873 (bulk 1866-1871), describe student life at the Judson Female Institute in Marion, Ala.
