Business correspondence and military papers, with some family letters. The business papers deal with the marketing of cotton, the settlement of debts, and the sale of a plantation. Papers concerning public affairs, including the actions taken by the Confederate Provisional Congress in 1861, the dissaffection in Tennessee, 1862, a petition from citizens of the Marion District (S.C.) seeking the arrest of persons arousing discontent among slaves, an account of the fortifications around Charleston, S.C., and a copy of a printed letter from Chestnut concerning the investigation of fraud in the government of South Carolina in 1871.
