Bacon's Rebellion memoir, 1705.

The manuscript, evidently written by "T.M." (Thomas Mathew) in 1705, and entitled "The beginnings, progress, and conclusion of _Bacon's Rebellion_ in Virginia in the Years 1675 & 1676," is really a memoir, with corrections in pencil, of the event, dedicated to Robert Harley ( - ), a Secretary of State in 1705. The memoir is an objective account of the rebellion, and a fair estimation of the roles of Bacon and Governor Berkeley. This item is a "true copy" of a manuscript (the original of which is in the Library of Congress) presented to Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) by Rufus King (1755-1827), who acquired it from Collins, Booksellers, in London in 1803. This copy is one of two apparently authorized by Jefferson; the other is at the Virginia Historical Society.
