Miscellaneous manuscripts, 1774-1792.

Consists of 2 folders. There are eleven original letters: eight letters dated 1774-1775 from John Ewing to his wife, Hannah Ewing; one dated 1775 to Ewing from an unidentified correspondent in Aberdeen; one dated 1794 from Ewing to the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania; and one of 1797 to John Nicholson. These are accompanied by a provenance note. In addition there are photostatic copies of two more letters: three copies of a letter dated 1780 from Ewing to the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania accepting his appointment as Provost; two of these copies are positive images, the third is negative; and one copy (negative) of a letter dated 1792 from Ewing to the Trustees.

Presbyterian minister and professor of natural philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania. A vice-president of the American Philosophical Society, he contributed articles on astronomy to their Transactions. Ewing served on commissions with D. Rittenhouse to settle boundary disputes. The 1784 notebook contains astronomical observations made during an expedition in the summer of 1784 to settle such a dispute.
