The collection includes reports, correspondence, proposals, personnel files, participant forms, photographs, reprints, bibliographies, films, and administrative records. The collection principally documents expeditions and the work of scientists associated with the program. Expedition files include documentation of expeditions to the Amazon, Baja California, the Great Barrier Reef and Australia, the Bering Sea, Caribbean, Eniwetok, North and South Pacific and Southeast Asia.

Per F. Scholander proposed in 1961 that the National Science Foundation fund a research vessel designed as a floating biological laboratory and a series of expeditions. R/V Alpha Helix was built in 1966 and operated by SIO. The ship was used for some twenty expeditions between 1966-1980. From the description of Records, 1966-1980.
