Observations of Dr. Edward Augustus Holyoke addressed to Nathaniel Walker Appleton and the Massachusetts Medical Society. These yearly reports (1782-88) are based upon his practice in Salem and contain a monthly catalog of illnesses and diseases, prescriptions, and reports on weather and climatic changes. Bills of mortality (1782-86) document the number of deaths per month, causes of death, and the age of the deceased.

Edward Augustus Holyoke was born in Marblehead, Massachusetts on August 1, 1728. He attended Harvard College during his father Edward Holyoke's tenure as President and graduated in 1746. After graduation he worked for a short time as a schoolmaster before beginning to study medicine and became a doctor in Salem, Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Medical Society was founded in 1781. Early members of the society published its transactions and papers presented at meetings; in 1812 they began publishing New England Journal of Medicine and Surgery. In the early 19th century Harvard College and the society agreed that both organizations could examine candidates and award a degree or a certificate of approval, as appropriate.
