Papers on the military career of John S. Billings, physician and librarian, found in the Adjutant General's Office. Papers in the A.C.P. file consist primarily of correspondence and petitions in support of Billings for the post of Surgeon General in 1882-3, 1886-7, and 1890. Also included are some orders and his commissions. The Surgeon's File also contains orders and commissions, and also includes reports from his posts and accounts of his travels on government business. The Medical Officer's File consists of some cross-references and summary accounts of Billing's military service from the same file as the Surgeon's File but not filmed with the Surgeon's File materials. The final grouping are excerpts from the printed Special Orders series relating to Billings.
