Boston State Hospital and its predecessors were responsible for providing residential care and treatment of mentally ill persons in the Boston metropolitan area from 1839 to 1981. Employee newsletters were prepared by the hospital's Demonstration Office to communicate news and to announce programs and coming events.

The Boston Lunatic Hospital was established as a municipal agency in 1839; it was renamed Boston Insane Hospital in 1897.
