Letters of Boston lawyer William H. Gardiner to his daughter Mary Gardiner Davis and her husband William Nye Davis, giving detailed accounts of the Civil War from November 1862 to February 1863. Gardiner discussed various battles and campaigns, the politics of war, the Emancipation Proclamation, his distaste for abolitionists, the firing of Gen. George B. McClellan, and McClellan's visit to Massachusetts. Also, letters of Robert Davis describing New Orleans under the occupation of Gen. Benjamin Butler's forces, and other misc. family papers.

Benjamin Franklin Butler was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire, the sixth and youngest child of John Butler and Charlotte Ellison Butler.
