The artist sends the senator a view of the King's River Canyon in California. In the second letter, Bierstadt relates his art to that of the senator's. "Mine is a language composed of hieroglyphics of form and color appreciated by the intelligent few -- while yours appeals to that class and also to the great mass of mankind ... in that living gallery ..."
