Hunter family collection on Paul Horgan, 1929-1991.

Material collected by Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Hunter and other family members on Paul Horgan. Horgan and Hunter attended the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) in Roswell, New Mexico and became lifelong friends. The collection, which includes material sent to the Hunters by Horgan and other material collected by the Hunters, includes the following: a 1932 book of drawings sent to Mary Bland Hunter; a Horgan bibliography (1984, compiled by James G. Stevens); letters to the Hunters and others (1932-1981); correspondence with NMMI regarding Horgan's nomination for distinguished alumnus (1983); miscellaneous newspaper clippings regarding Horgan's achievements and activities (1955-1984); text from "Rio Grande: Scenario for Speaker and Orchestra" (1954) and associated clippings from the performance by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 1957; two issues of American Scholar journal with articles by Horgan (1990-1991); autographed copies of pamphlets and other ephemera (1935-1990); photographs of Horgan, some autographed (1957-1988); color prints of Horgan drawings (1947-1987); and autographed original drawings, including a self-portrait of Horgan and a caricature of an instructor at NMMI (circa 1929).

Horgan (1903-1995) was born in Buffalo, N.Y. and spent his youth in New Mexico. He attended the Eastman School of Music, 1923-26, where he studied voice and participated in operatic productions. After leaving the Eastman School he turned to a career in writing, publishing many fiction and non-fiction works, for which he won two Pulitzer prizes and a Bancroft Prize.
