Maud Gonne collection, [ca. 1870-1978], (bulk 1901-1902; 1973-1974).

This collection of letters, photographs, and genealogical material relating to Maud Gonne includes primary materials collected by Professor Conrad Balliet in the course of his research, as well as audiotape interviews conducted by him with a number of family members and acquaintances. Included are ten letters by Maud Gonne written between 1902 and 1950 in which she discusses her marriage to Major John MacBride and her feelings for W.B. Yeats, among other subjects. Also present are four letters written by her father, Thomas Gonne, while serving in India. The collection also includes twelve photographs of Maud Gonne dating from her childhood through old age. Other family members represented in photographs include her sister, Kathleen, and her husband, John MacBride. Among the genealogical materials collected by Professor Balliet are copies of birth, baptism, marriage, and death records for a number of Gonne and MacBride family members. Finally, the collection also includes a number of interviews conducted in the 1970s with family members and friends of Maud Gonne.

Edith Maud Gonne was born on December 21, 1866 in Tongham, England, the eldest daughter of Captain Thomas Gonne and Edith Frith Gonne, née Cook. In 1882, she accompanied her father to Dublin where he died in 1886. Maud Gonne then briefly attempted to become an actress, before contracting tuberculosis and seeking treatment in France.
