The Wisconsin Institution for the Education for the Blind was established by citizens of Janesville in 1849 and incorporated as a state supported institution in 1850. The name was changed in 1885 to the Wisconsin School for the Blind, and in 1945 to the Wisconsin School for the Visually Handicapped.
