Photographs from the Advertising, Extension, Consumer Relations, and Engineering departments of the International Harvester Company, a Chicago-based manufacturer of trucks, engines, tractors, farm implements, and construction equipment. Images include depictions of the company's product line, factories (McCormick, Deering, Plano, Champion, Osborn, and Weber Wagon Works), dealerships and showrooms, employees, expositions and county fairs, agricultural activities, field testing of equipment, foreign subsidiaries, manufacturing equipment and processes, product development and servicing, promotional activities, rural landscapes and small towns, road construction, railroads, binder twine mills, and plantations. Among the subjects documented are the activities of a large-scale, diversified, multinational manufacturing corporation, the mechanization of agriculture, the growth of the modern transportation industry, and the transition of the United States to an urbanized industrial nation. The prints and the negatives in this collection are considered unprocessed though most are described with the microfilm in the finding aid. The images are available in various formats. All 12,290 glass and nitrate negatives are on the 35 mm microfilm and in a 35 mm reduction negative. An additional 4x5 inch negative was created for about 3200 of the more exceptional or significant images. About 4000 of the original negatives were printed and these prints have been loosely organized into twenty subject groups. 100 additional photographs document work on the collection or are images not represented in the negatives. Twenty-six additional reels of microfilm also came from work on the collection. The processed portion of this collection is summarized above and is described in the register.
