Born in London, he left school at the age of thirteen and worked odd jobs until his family emigrated to the United States. He earned a B.A. and Master's degrees from the University of Iowa, and worked various jobs; Felton became active in community theatre, and eventually landed a job as a director for NBC radio in Chicago.
