Papers and photographs, 1903-1965, (bulk 1962-1963).

Papers and photographs of Morris G. Oesterreich, a Navy veteran of the Spanish-American War, relating mainly to his term (1962-1963) as national Commander-in-Chief of the United Spanish War Veterans (USWV). Scattered papers include numerous letters, telegrams, certificates, and newspaper articles congratulating him on his election to national office in the USWV and regarding a Milwaukee dinner in his honor. Correspondents consist largely of local and state government officials and leaders of state and national veterans organizations but include a telegram from President John F. Kennedy and a letter from a former Navy shipmate who accompanied Admiral Richard Byrd on his South Pole expeditions, written on expedition stationery. Several letters relate to his participation in the 1962 Veterans Day ceremony in Washington, DC. Other papers include a discharge form and scattered records from his service in the Navy at the beginning of the twentieth century and newspaper clippings recapping visits and ceremonies Oesterreich took part in as Commander of the USWV. Photographs include a shot of Oesterreich in Navy dress uniform, and assorted photographs from conventions and the 1962 national Veterans Day ceremony. The oversized folder contains a bust view of Oesterreich, likely an official picture from his time as Commander of the USWV.
