Howard Mendenhall Buck papers, 1902-1935.

Correspondence of Howard Mendenhall Buck, physician and heraldic expert. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Buck practiced medicine until 1900, then spent several decades researching heraldry. He was particularly interested in locating an intact impression of the Plymouth Company seal, an effort that apparently never succeeded. He also provided advice to Harvard University and other institutions on the meaning and significance of their seals. Buck corresponded with librarians, researchers, genealogists, and historians in the United States, Great Britain, and other countries. Among his correspondents are Senator Henry Cabot Lodge and James Phinney Baxter. Also included are numerous drawings and printed illustrations of seals and heraldic devices.
