Military commissions, orders, and correspondence of Major William Hudson Ballard, of Amesbury, Mass., an American officer in the Revolutionary War. The orders, from Colonel Ichabod Alden and Generals James Clinton, John Stark, and Nathanael Greene, are mostly concerned with the campaign against Indian and Loyalist forces in New York and Pennsylvania after the Wyoming Valley Massacre of 1778. The correspondence relates to Ballard's attempts after the war to obtain further compensation for his services. Also included is a manuscript biography of Ballard, miscellaneous Ballard family papers, and a shorthand sermon by Thomas Allen dated 1794.

John Stark, American revolutionary war general. He was promoted to Brigadier General in October 1777. In September 1780, he was ordered to relieve General Saint Claire at West Point.
