In response to the hardships suffered by American artists during the Depression, the American Artists Group was formed in 1936 by Samuel Golden and Carl Zigrosser. They hoped to sell original prints by known artists made in unlimited runs, and sell them by mail at unusually low prices. By keeping costs low, the American Artists Group hoped to generate steady incomes for their artists, built on volume sales, by opening the fine art market to a new kind of customer.
