Consists of a letter dated 29 January 1859 to Samuel A. Allibone, author of the Critical Dictionary of English Literature, and British and American Authors (Philadelphia: Childs & Peterson, 1859-1872). Macaulay is objecting to a passage in the Dictionary's article on William Ellery Channing (vol. 1, p. 367), where it is stated that Macaulay harshly reviewed Channing's book about Milton. Macaulay asserts that he never saw, let alone reviewed, the book in question. This letter has been pasted onto cardboard. [The book by Channing to which Macaulay refers is: Remarks on the character and writings of John Milton (Boston: T. R. Butts & Co., 1826).]

William Ellery Channing (1780-1842) graduated from Harvard College in 1798. He served on the board of the Harvard Corporation from 1813 to 1826, where he worked for the establishment of the Divinity School, which occurred in 1816.
