Ernest Hatch Wilkins was born in Newton Centre, Massachusetts on September 14, 1880. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Amherst College in 1900 and began his teaching career there, receiving the M.A. from Amherst in 1903. He taught at Harvard University from 1906 to 1912 while working towards the Ph. D. in Romance Languages, which he received in 1910.
