Ich werde mir den Major einladen : Lustspiel in 1 Akt, ca. 1862, n.d.

The German play, which was first published in 1862, is an adaptation of the French play J'invite le colonel! by Labiche and Marc-Michel. The file contains materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Berlin: Eduard Bloch / L. Lassar's Buchhandlung, n.d.), which is annotated as a prompt-book; and 4 handwritten role books, for the following parts: Elise, Carbonel's Frau; Major Bernard; Julius, Carbonel's Freund; and Louis, Diener bei Carbonel. The one role missing is that of Herr Carbonel, ein reicher Privatmann. The published copy, which lacks its cover, likely dates from around 1862; the reverse of the title page bears a note from the author: "Den grösseren stehenden Bühnen gegenüber als Manuscript gedruckt und für diese nur durch H. Michaelson in Berlin zu beziehen." The role books appear worn but bear no annotations that might provide clues to their history. In the context of the Learned Collection it is possible to speculate that the items belonged to Theodor Bloch, who ran a theater lending library in Philadelphia. The title is listed in Bloch's catalog for his library, dated 1886 (see box 34). (The collection's holdings of theater newspapers and playbills contain no reference to this play.)
