Harry Scherman at one point responds to Werfel's novel The Song of Bernadette and, later, takes Werfel's novel Verdi under consideration at the Book-of-the-Month Club. Bernadine Scherman (née Kielty) was Harry's wife; Harry and Bernadine had 2 children, Thomas and Katharine. Alma Mahler had a friendly relationship with the family.
