An exchange between Kantorowicz and Werfel in 1942 concerns a CBS radio program about Werfel's life and work, as part of a Spanish-language series broadcast to South America. In the 1944 letter Kantorowicz refers to having conveyed a request from the exiled Austrian conductor Ernst Ròˆmer, apparently concerning permission to perform Werfel's play Jacobowsky und der Oberst in Mexico; the latter request was mediated by Anna Seghers.

Alfred Kantorowicz (1899-1979) was a German Jewish writer, critic, and journalist with associations to the Communist party; he had to flee Germany in 1933, took part in the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1938, was imprisoned in camps in France after the outbreak of World War II, and succeeded in emigrating to the U.S. in 1941, where he worked with the foreign news service of CBS radio.
