Papers, 1787-1950.

Papers of Elijah Terry (1787-1850), a schoolmaster on Long Island, include school books with math and writing lessons, teaching certificates, contracts for running schools at various places on Long Island including Stony Brook, Setauket, Westhampton, Hauppauge, Corman and North Hempstead, accounts for tuition, and lists of scholars and days attended, 1806-1818. Similar certificates and lists of scholars for Philip Homan of Blue Point, L.I., date from 1836 and 1855. Other Terry family papers include summonses, powers of attorney, appointment as Justice of the Peace and other court records from New London, Connecticut, 1788-1797; appointment of Caleb M. Hulse and Elisabeth Terry as administrators of the estate of Brewster Terry, 1797; and deeds, leases, mortgages, quit-claims and summonses, 1787-1894, involving many members of the Terry family, as well as members of the Howell, Overton, Davis, Smith, Still, Hawkins and other families. Deeds pertain to property in the towns of Brookhaven and Southampton, N.Y.
