George Pepper and Richard Wetherill papers, 1896-1899.

Collection consists of documentation pertaining to the excavation and artifacts of Pueblo Bonito and other sites in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico. Records include four albums containing Pepper's and Wetherill's sketches, diagrams, and measurements of the areas excavated; Pepper's field notebook, 1896; transcriptions of his field notes, 1896-1899; his field catalogs, 1896-1897; typed copies of catalogs listing artifacts excavated from Pueblo Bonito, Pueblo Penasca Blanca, and Pueblo del Arroyo; typed copies of catalogs listing artifacts designated First and Second Wetherill Collections; catalogs listing negative numbers and information about expedition photographs; albums containing expedition photographs; and a copy of a paper entitled "Pueblo Bonito" prepared by Pepper for a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, December 16, 1898.

The collection was probably amassed by James Howard McGregor of the Anthropology Dept. as the first part of a lecture on the evolution of man. The first part was entitled "Apes" and the second, "Studies of Man." Many photographs come from the Museum's Dept. of Public Education.
