Collection consists of two unpublished manuscripts by Finsch, in German, "Beschreibender Katalog der Ethnologischen Sammlung," an extended catalog with text figures, relating to Pacific ethnographic specimens purchased from Finsch by the American Museum of Natural History in 1898; and "Betrage zur Volkerkunde des Westlichen Sudsee," consisting of text describing the inhabitants, dwellings, customs, etc. of various areas of the Southwest Pacific including Ontong Java, the Caroline, Marshall, and Gilbert Islands, New Guinea, and Bismarck Archipelago, with numerous text figures, and approximately 200 watercolor plates, some mounted for exhibit.

The collection was probably amassed by James Howard McGregor of the Anthropology Dept. as the first part of a lecture on the evolution of man. The first part was entitled "Apes" and the second, "Studies of Man." Many photographs come from the Museum's Dept. of Public Education.
