Records, which are more complete after 1880, include minutes of the Board of Trustees, 1800-1959; legal documents, copies and originals, 1677-ca. 1897, many of which concern Manhattan real estate owned by the school; account books, 1784-1932; class reports and student registers, 1838-1936; student address books, 1838-1938; photographs, ca. 1856-1968, of indivivdual students, classes, classroom activities, and sports teams; lists of teachers' salaries, 1890-1891 and 1902-1904; student compositions, reports, articles, and other works, ca. 1880-1985; school newspapers and magazines, 1904-1986; yearbooks, 1900-1985; an attendance register, 1846-1857; Treasurer's annual reports, 1895-1942, some of which are included in the Trustees' minutes; invitations and programs from school events; alumni bulletins, 1931-1975, and alumni directories, 1911-1984. Also included are miscellaneous lists of students; correspondence; documents concerning the schools' anniversaries, 1859-1984; histories of the school; financial records; football, baseball, and basketball schedules; sports trophies; and brochures. Also of note are writings by Truman Capote, done while he was a student at the Lower School between 1933 and 1936.
