Hovey's papers reflect his interest in volcanoes, particularly the 1902-1903 volcanic eruptions of Monte PeleĢe in Martinique and include descriptions and photographs of the eruption and its aftermath. Other photographs depict United States caves including Luray Caverns in Virginia, and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Hovey's correspondence pertains to volcanoes, earthquakes, and meteorites. Correspondence about Museum matters such as the acquisition and identification of rocks and invertebrate fossils, preparation for exhibits, general administrative matters and budget. Hovey's correspondents include other scientists, the lay public, and scientific organizations. Also, some letters written on his behalf by curator Chester A. Reeds; and manuscripts of some of Hovey's publications and those of several other researchers.

Chester Albert Reeds was a geologist and museum curator. Reeds joined the American Museum of Natural History in 1912 as assistant curator in the Dept. of Geology and Invertebrate Paleontology, eventually becoming associate curator, then curator in 1927, following W.D. Matthew's move to California. During the years 1924 to 1930, Reeds was also the editor for Division I of the AMNH Publication Committee, overseeing the AMNH bulletins, novitates, memoirs and guide leaflets ...
