Material concerning the study and collection of international coins, paper money, medals, and tokens. Focus is on American and ancient coinage as well as Arabic and Indian currencies. Material encompasses scrapbooks of news clippings and articles, plates cut from various publications, and unpublished theses and dissertations, catalogs, and other unpublished manuscripts. In addition there are notes about numerous aspects of numismatics and correspondence of collectors and coin dealers. Also some inventories with accompanying photographs of coins held by private collectors, rubbings, and impressions of coins. Also, an indenture pertaining to Machin's Mills in Ulster County, N.Y. where coins were struck, 1787.

Howland Wood (1877-1938) was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and graduated from Brown University in 1900. He became a member of the ANS in 1909. By 1913 he had been appointed Curator, remaining in this position until his death in 1938. At that time, the Society only maintained a single curator, with two assistants.
