Correspondence, reports, memoranda, printed matter, clippings, and other material concerning American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) activities in France, and cooperation with French Jewish organizations. Material, 1916-1939, primarily deals with aid to Russian prisoners of war, and Jewish refugees from Eastern Europe following World War I, and Germany and elsewhere following the Nazi takeover. Material, 1940-1945, concerns JDC aid to French and foreign Jewish refugees, including aid to refugee canteens, 1940-1942; child care, 1940-1944; cultural and religious organizations, 1933, 1937, 1939-1942; and emigration, 1940-1945. Also includes reports on deportations, 1942-1945; detention, transit, and concentration camps, including those at Le Vernet, St. Cyprian, Gurs, Rieucross, Rivesaltes, Drancy, Camp des Milles, and Recebedou. Organizations represented include Alliance Israelite Universelle, 1916-1918; American Relief for France, 1944; Comitʹe d'Assistance aux Rʹefugiʹes d'Allemagne, 1936-1943; Committee for the Defense of the Rights of Jews in Central and Eastern Europe and Union for the Protection of the Human Person, 1939-1942; Fʹedʹeration des Sociʹetiʹes Juives de France, 1939-1942; and Union Gʹenʹerale des Israʹelites de France, 1941-1944.

The American Joint Distribution Committee was founded on November 27, 1914 when the American Jewish Relief Committee (AJRC) and the Central Committee for the Relief of Jews (CCRJ) joined forces under the name of the Joint Distribution Committee of American Funds for the Relief of Jewish War Sufferers.
