The collection, though not exhaustive, includes Bretscher's own accounts of his career and research, a useful section documenting the work at the Cavendish on the 'Tube Alloys' project in the form of contemporary research notes and reports by members of the team, reports prepared for government committees, correspondence with Chadwick and others, and documentation of Bretscher's work at the U.K. Atomic Energy Authority Research Establishment at Harwell with special reference to collaborative research projects and national and international nuclear data committees.

A Swiss chemist trained at Zürich, came at Rutherford's invitation to the Cavendish Laboratory in 1936; he was involved in the 'Tube Alloys' project on uranium and plutonium and was a member of the British Mission at Los Alamos from early 1944, working in Fermi's Advanced Development Division.
