Diary describes Johnson's experiences as an engineering officer along the coast of South Carolina and in the withdrawal through South Carolina and North Carolina under pressure from Sherman's army. He made notes on a tour of the South Carolina coastal defenses, various stages of the Confederate withdrawal, the battle of Averasboro, the battle of Bentonville, and the surrender negotiations between general William T. Sherman and Joseph E. Johnston.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829.
