A journal of Albert L. Norris : Epping, New Hamps. from April 1st 1858 to [March 11, 1860], 1857-1862.

Consists of a diary kept by Norris from April 1, 1858 to March 11, 1860 along with 19 miscellaneous diary sheets and two draft letters dating from 1857 to 1862. Entries are a mixture of business and social news together with Norris' religious thoughts. After more than a year of working for Pickering, Norris moved to Boston and was employed in a third dry goods store, Palmer, Waterman, and Co. After resigning this position, he continued his career as a merchant in a partnership with Orien S. Currier. Commenting on his business life, Norris said: "I feel that I have been highly favored with good employees--good influences and good pay" and "I like store business very much." The loose sheets and two letters to his sister provide further insight into Norris' personal history from 1857 and his feelings about the Civil War. Norris indicated his pro-Union sympathies on December 1, 1859 when he wrote from Wilbraham: "Tonight I helped with some 8 others to make and hang on the old Elm an image [of] Gov. Wise in effigee." Norris expressed much concern for his twin brother, Rufus, who was a soldier in the army and was eager to take part himself. During summer vacation from Harvard, he served as a medical cadet in a hospital near Richmond.
